Growing Success

They studied success.

Not flash-in-the-pan, easy come easy go, overnight success. The real kind.

People who achieved meaningful things. And kept achieving them

They asked what made them so successful.

And you know what they found?

It wasn’t brains. Or beauty. Or luck. Or God-given gifts.

It was grit.

A funny little word for a great big important idea.

That passion and perseverance are more valuable than anything when it comes to making it.

And you know what Kiwi Business Owner-managers all have in common?

YEAH,
GRIT.

They’re determined, they’re street smart, they’re resourceful, they’re resilient.

Where others say ‘we can’t’, they say ‘we can’. Where others just talk, they get out and do.

And grit pays off.

That grit gets them further than any amount of IQ or luck. Often all by themselves.

Then eventually, that grit asks ‘what’s next?’ How can we go further?

As the saying goes, if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

The Icehouse is the place to go together.

To experience the confidence found in a community of others that have that same abundance of grit.

To learn from the best, and from each other.

As we’ve seen from the more than 4,000 Kiwi Business Owner Managers who’ve experienced The Icehouse since 2001, when they come together in this way, they go on to grow at a rate that’s two and a half times the average business.

Grit arrives alone, leaves together, and goes far, far further.

Working with The Icehouse, doing the Owner Manager Programme 18 years ago, I was on OMP number five. And off the back of that and off the back of these conversations each and every week, we've been a best workplace finalist for the last 18 years. And we've won this award in its various forms about five times. So, engaging our people, just gives me a huge amount of joy and I always lead it back to The Icehouse and my learnings.

I think founding my business was an example of grit. It was certainly taking myself outside of my comfort zone, outside of my studies to pursue a wild idea with a lot of naivety and a lot of risk. To go against the grain certainly taught me a lot about resilience and a lot about sticking to your guns, believing in yourself when a lot of people don't and I think it was a really good example early on of how to apply grit to my journey.

As an entrepreneur, you need the grit and determination to be successful. As an entrepreneur, or business person, you are innately optimistic. So, you have this glimmer of hope. You can see you've got this vision, and it's the grit that gets you to that vision. So, the team at The Icehouse are incredibly experienced. They know their stuff, but another thing they're really, really approachable, it's a place where you feel welcome. And it's a place where you can ask any question and you know that they're gonna help you out.

So grit for me, I think has really that definition of stoicness being able to say the opportunities and adversity rather than just the challenges and block out the noise and just get on with it. I don't know how I would have got through COVID without my OMP course-mates actually, they were there for me and I was there for them.

The team at The Icehouse made me a better leader. Having the right people and culture we can make the impossible possible. Since my business partner has done the programme, I can see him changing himself a lot. He is more confident with the team and spending more time with family.
